About
Alabama Fertility (formally Alabama Fertility Specialists) is an independent, physician-owned practice in Birmingham, Alabama, co-founded by reproductive endocrinologist Michael Steinkampf, MD, who has since retired. In September 2021 the Birmingham practice ART merged into it, and the combined team now works under the Alabama Fertility name. Five reproductive endocrinologists currently practice there, including Janet McLaren Bouknight, MD, and Beth Malizia, MD.
The clinic is at 3490 Independence Drive in Birmingham, with an on-site laboratory for hormone, immune and advanced semen testing, and keeps affiliations with local hospitals including Brookwood Baptist, St. Vincent's and Grandview.
Treatment ranges from ovulation induction, IUI and donor sperm insemination to IVF with extended embryo culture, ICSI, assisted hatching and preimplantation genetic testing (PGT-A and PGT-M), with embryos frozen on site. The donor egg program offers both fresh cycles with its own recruited donors and frozen eggs through a partnership with Fairfax EggBank. The practice also handles recurrent miscarriage and complex reproductive surgery, such as hysteroscopic, laparoscopic and robotic procedures for fibroids and endometriosis, as well as microsurgical tubal reversal.
